Meet Kit

Do you want to take a trip back to 1934? Well, if you do, read the series, Kit Kittredge. This beautifully illustrated chapter was written by Valerie Tripp and in my opinion, takes you back to the Great Depression in 1934.

Kit, a clever, resourceful girl, is trying to face the up’s and down’s of the Great Depression in spite of hard times. The Great Depression is an event that occured just after World War 1. Many people had gotten nervous about their money, so they stopped buying many things as possible. As a result, many stores were shut down. Many store owners and job workers had also lost their jobs. Since they didn’t have any money coming in, they just got poorer and poorer. Kit’s mother had come up  with a thrifty plan to turn their home into a boarding house with some boarders. Boarders were paying guests. At first, her family didn’t like the idea, especially Kit when she said a boarder would be staying in her room!

Muggie Maggie

Have you ever wonder why we learn cursive in school? Do people ever tell that you are adamant or stubborn? Well, if you ever experienced these things, then you should read Beverly Cleary’s Muggie Maggie. I recommend this book for students and teachers as well. This is a story about a girl who has a strong opinion and then she has a bunch of twists and turns in her life.

The book Muggie Maggie, is about an eight year old girl named Maggie Schultz who just started third grade. On the first day of school, she discovers that her class will be starting to learn cursive. She has a bunch of things on her mind. What’s wrong with print? Why do we have to even learn cursive? When the class starts to learn cursive, Maggie’s teacher, Mrs. Leeper says that cursive letters are like roller coasters, she starts to write the cursive letters, but in a sloppy way. When her parents start writing cursive, their cursive is different from what Mrs. Leeper taught Maggie. For example, her mother’s handwriting leans backwards instead of forward and instead of dots for i’s, she used circles. The next day, she decided to write like her parents, but as a result, her mother had to come after school to have a conference about Maggie’s cursive. After that incident, Maggie started writing fancy cursive letters, but then it becomes worse. Maggie has to go to the principal’s office too! She keeps saying that she doesn’t want to learn cursive, but has to anyway. If you are wondering why the book is called Muggie Maggie, you have to read the book. Does Maggie learn cursive? If she does, what made her? In the end, she has a surprise that you will never forget.

In conclusion, Muggie Maggie is a good book for kids and teachers as well because Mrs. Leeper uses a clever way for Maggie to learn cursive. I suggest that teacher’s use that method on students who have trouble staying on track. So? What are waiting for? Go and read Muggie Maggie!

Violet

Do you like action? How about mysteries? Well if you do, then you should read The Thea Sisters! The Thea Sisters was written by Italian author, Elisabetta Dami. Even though the five mice come from different parts of the globe and have different personalities, they all have one thing in common; an adventurous spirit. In this character review, I will tell you about one of the five mouselets, Violet.

Violet is a mouse who dreams of becoming a famous violinist. She even has her own violin to play. Her home country is China which is all the way across the globe! She is a little bit sensitive and doesn’t like being teased. She can also be a grouch if she does not get enough sleep. She is like me because we both share a love of books. She also likes to listen to classical music and drink green tea. Additionally, she is detail- oriented and is always open to new things. She has long, black hair and purple, almond- shaped eyes and likes the color purple. She is also intelligent and loves to learn. She is also scared of heights. Her friends are Colette, Nicky, Pamela and Paulina who are also characters in the series, The Thea Sisters.

In conclusion, I think The Thea Sisters is a great series to read. It is also great for people who love action and mysteries!By now, the adventurous spirit in you will be enthusiastic to know more about Violet and her friends. What are you waiting for? Give it a try!
